<p class="yiv1788229621MsoNormal"><span>Former Vice President Atiku

week ago.</span></p>

<p class="yiv1788229621MsoNormal"><span>Reacting to the lingering

<p class="yiv1788229621MsoNormal"><span>According to him, both the

<p>Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says he has been deeply
saddened by the bombings and other acts of violence on Christmas
Day leading to the loss of many lives.<br />
<br />
He expressed his profound and heartfelt sympathies to the families
of those who lost dear ones and wished&nbsp; those that were
injured a quick recovery.<br />
<br />
The former Vice President while&nbsp; condemning in the strongest
terms the callous and wanton destruction of lives in the spate of
violence&nbsp; at Madalla, Gudaka, Damaturu, Maiduguri and Jos said
there is no cause that could&nbsp; justify the snuffing out
innocent lives.<br />
<br />
Atiku in a statement by his media office in Abuja on Tuesday warned
that acts of violence as we are witnessing in the country can lead
to retaliatory actions in which more and more innocents will
suffer.<br />
<br />
"It can also lead to the erosion of confidence in organized society
and government setting the stage for anarchy," he said.<br />
<br />
But this, according to the former Vice President, "is precisely the
time when our support for the authorities needs to be at its
strongest."<br />
<br />
He called on all citizens without bias for religion or ethnicity to
be good, kind and supportive of one another in this difficult
period.<br />
<br />
The former Vice President also urged for a greater respect for the
sanctity of life and differences in culture and religion.<br />
<br />
He reiterated that enlightenment through education, economic
empowerment and constructive dialogue are a panacea to stemming
this cycle of blood letting.<br />

<p>Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has advised former
President Obasanjo to defend himself against the allegation of
lobbying the former George Bush administration to support his
unpopular third term ambition in 2006 which was contained in the
recently published memoirs of former Secretary of State,
Condoleezza Rice.<br />
<br />
 Obasanjo told the National Mirror newspaper that his former deputy
destroyed his own chance of succeeding him in 2007. Also Obasanjo
said in the interview that Atiku is unreliable and that he lacks
the vision, orientation and experience to step into his
shoes.<br />
<br />
 Describing the allegation as diversionary in a statement issued by
his media office in Abuja, the former Vice President said he was
unbelievably shocked by the distortion of truth by Obasanjo who is
supposed to speak honestly like a statesman.<br />
<br />
 The former US Secretary of State was quoted on page 638 of her
memoir titled "No Higher Honour" as saying "In 2006 when President
Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria sidled up to President Bush and
suggested that he (Obasanjo) might change the constitution so that
he could serve a third term, President Bush told him not to do it."
In Bush's words "You have served your country well. Now turn over
power and become a statesman."<br />
<br />
 Reacting to these allegations, however, the former Vice President
said his problems with Obasanjo had nothing to do with these
charges. Instead, Atiku recalled that his opposition to Obasanjo's
third term ambition was the beginning of his travails.<br />
<br />
 Atiku maintained that Obasanjo had no succession plan from day
one, and that he wanted to be Nigeria's Robert Mugabe.<br />
<br />
 The former Vice President also accused Obasanjo of handing over
power to the late President Umaru Yar'Adua reluctantly as a
face-saving measure following the collapse of his third term
ambition on the floor of the Senate on May 16th 2006.<br />
<br />
 The Turaki Adamawa explained that he opposed tenure elongation of
Obasanjo on the grounds that the constitution should not be amended
for the sake of granting one man's life term ambition rather than
public interest. On the claim by Obasanjo that he didn't discuss
third term ambition with anybody, Atiku recalled that the former
President sent two senior cabinet ministers to him to deliberate on
a draft constitution. Curiously, Atiku said, the draft was silent
on term limit, which made him to smell a rat and that his courage
to confront Obasanjo over this controversial plan was the beginning
of his troubles with his former boss and the subsequent plots to
frustrate his ambition to become President.<br />
<br />
 In what appears to be one of his bluntest public statements, Atiku
accused Obasanjo of imposing a crisis - prone last minute
succession by bringing a medically challenged late Umaru Yar'Adua
to succeed him as a means of punishing Nigerians for rejecting his
life Presidency ambition.<br />
<br />
 Atiku praised Nigeria's past leaders including General Yakubu
Gowon, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, General Ibrahim Babangida, Ernest
Shonekan, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, statesmen, legislators, past
Chief Justices and the media for coming together to pull Nigeria
from the brink and ensuring an orderly succession to the Presidency
by the then Vice President Dr. Jonathan Goodluck. "Without this,
Nigeria would have been plunged into yet another major crisis
arising from the actions of one man," Atiku said.<br />
<br />
 On the allegations of inexperience, incompetence and unreliability
made against him by Obasanjo, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar
said Obasanjo is the last person to lecture any Nigerian on
reliability.<br />
<br />
 With the recent revelations by former U.S. Secretary of State,
Condoleezza Rice in her published memoirs in which she disclosed
how Obasanjo lobbied former President Bush to support his third
term bid, Atiku Abubakar advised his former boss to defend himself
on this latest moral challenge to his reputation before he could
question the reliability of others.<br />
<br />
 Atiku also dismissed as preposterous the allegation against him by
Obasanjo that he is inexperienced. He challenged Obasanjo to
disclose any responsibility or task that he assigned to him while
in office, which he didn't discharge competently.<br />
<br />
 Rather than losing his head to underserved flattering newspaper
attention, former Vice President Abubakar said Obasanjo should
apologize to Nigerians for dragging our politics into disrepute
because of his disregard for fair play or the basic rules of
democracy.<br />
<br />
 He accused Obasanjo of being obsessed with the myth of
indispensability and the false notion of being the cleanest person.
According to Atiku, even President Jonathan and the late Umaru
Yar'Adua are not safe from Obasanjo's self-righteous attacks on
other leaders.<br />

<p>Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the
late<em>Guardian</em> <em></em>publisher, Alex Ibru as a unique and
quintessential newspaper proprietor, whose standard towers above
many.</p>

<p>In a tribute to Ibru released by his media office in Abuja, the
former Vice President extolled the late publisher as a unique
Nigerian who never used his newspaper to seek political influence
or personal advantages from those in the corridors of power.</p>

<p>According to Atiku, the late publisher gave Nigerians a quality
newspaper, which earned it the respect of all.</p>

<p>Describing the late Guardian newspaper Chairman and Publisher as
a rare Nigerian, the former Vice President said Mr. Ibru has left
behind the legacy of a fiercely independent newspaper, which is
read by many.</p>

<p>"Building and sustaining&nbsp;<em>The</em> <em>Guardian</em> as
a formidable newspaper that speaks truth to power at all times is a
rare feat in Africa, where dictatorships still hold sway, despite
the practice of democratic rule," Atiku added.</p>

<p>He condoled the Ibru family, Government and people of Delta
State,&nbsp;the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN)
and the management and staff of&nbsp;<em>The</em> <em>Guardian</em>
over the tragic loss.</p>

<p>Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that the provision
of adequate security to lives and property is a key factor that
will spur economic growth and development of the country.</p>

<p>The former Vice President who spoke against the backdrop of
rising wave of insecurity in the country said that it is
counter-productive to treat security as though it is disconnected
from economic and political development, when in fact, they are
inter-related.</p>

<p>Speaking at the&nbsp;Founder's Day celebration of the American
University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola over the weekend, Atiku Abubakar
said that for the country to enthrone a new regime of security, it
must move quickly to address the socio-economic challenges facing
the nation.<img src="/media/23154/atiku at aun founders day.gif" alt="Atiku at AUN Founders day"/></p>

<p>He listed the challenges to include high levels of unemployment
and illiteracy and poor and unaccountable governance.</p>

<p>"Put another way, it (insecurity) largely results from the
inability of the government to fulfill the aspirations of our
people, especially our young people," Atiku Abubakar said in the
speech titled "Addressing the Socio-Economic Dimensions of
Nigeria's Internal Security Challenges."</p>

<p>The former Vice President said that the focus on sophisticated
security gadgets and equipment, intelligence gathering and
personnel, among others is important, but "perhaps, more important
is the need to get our economy humming so that the vast army of
unemployed people in this country can have jobs not only to earn an
income but to contribute to the development of the country."</p>

<p>Equally important, Atiku noted, is the need to fix the
educational system and to ensure that the nation's young people are
in school.</p>

<p>"What kind of society are we building when about 80% of
school-age children in the North East and some parts of the
North-West are not in school?" he queried.</p>

<p>He noted that the twin goals of economic development and
nation-building have become even more urgent as Nigeria's economy
continues to sputter and national cohesion becomes ever more
frayed.</p>

<p>However, the former Vice President said that in order to
accelerate our nation-building process we need to be engaged in
rapid economic development to improve people's living standards and
to help legitimize the state and leadership of the country;
equitable development of the various regions that compose the
country and democratic freedoms which allow people to discuss and
agree on the kind of nation they would like to build.</p>

<p>In addition, he stressed on the need for mutual respect and
tolerance of social difference based on religion, ethnicity,
language and, above all, the protection of lives and property,
among others.</p>

<p>But he said that good governance is the key to starting to
address these critical socio-economic challenges.</p>

<p>"Good, efficient and cost-effective governance will prioritize
government programmes, mobilize and focus our energies on what
needs to be done urgently, enforce rules, value the people, show
fairness and equity and assist and protect the most needy and
vulnerable," Atiku Abubakar said.</p>

<p>He identified&nbsp;&nbsp;priorities that would enable
Nigeria&nbsp;&nbsp;realize its full potential as massive
investments in infrastructure development for their immediate
employment impact; massive investments in and revitalization of
education so we have highly skilled labour and better informed
citizens and improvements in health care delivery so that we have a
healthy workforce and citizenry.</p>

<p>Others are massive improvements in the security sector,
including equipment, personnel, training, intelligence gathering
and better coordination of the various relevant agencies and
between them and their foreign counterparts and concerted efforts
to address the cries of neglect and marginalization by different
sections of the country in order to renew our federalism (including
making investments that address the peculiar needs and resource
endowments of specific regions).</p>
